Chapter 6

THE NEXT DAY, Finn woke up early, eager to start proving to all the Figueroas that he—not Rusty—was the best pet on the block… whatever that meant.

Because Alyssa had laid out her bathing suit and his life jacket already, he knew they would be having another swimming lesson after breakfast. This time, Finn thought, alligator or no alligator, I’m going to swim like a fish and make it all the way across the pool. Alyssa will be so impressed, she will give me all the treats she has, and Rusty will have to admit I’m the favorite.

With those happy thoughts still in his head, he wolfed down his breakfast faster than he ever had, and walked a little faster, too, when Alyssa took him to the corner and back. She even had to tug on his leash a couple of times and tell him to slow down.

“You can’t wait to get in the pool, can you?” she asked.

Finn wagged his tail extra hard when he heard the word “pool.” Images of the clear blue water filled his head, and he pictured paddling through it with ease.

When they got home, Alyssa wasted no time getting into her swimsuit, putting on Finn’s life vest, and leading him out to the pool. As before, she waded in first.

“Come on in, Finn!” she called when she was waist-deep in the water.

Finn turned in a circle to rev himself up, then made his way toward Alyssa. With each step he took, his stomach gurgled. But he ignored it. I’m probably just excited, he thought. Soon he was floating along in the water beside Alyssa. She took his paws in her hands and reminded him how to paddle and how to push out with his back leg. The gurgling in his stomach got stronger, and the way he bobbed in the water made him queasier with every splash. But still he told himself, It’s nothing.

Alyssa backed away from him to take up a position halfway down the pool. “Swim to me, Finn. You can do it, boy!”

I can do it! Finn thought. I can make it to Alyssa. And I don’t feel like the washing machine is doing that “chugga chugga chugga” dance in my stomach. Nope, not at all.

But the more he told himself that, and the more he bobbed and splashed in the water, the stronger the “chugga chugga” feeling got, until…

Blegh! Finn upchuggad his whole breakfast out into the pool.

“Oh no!” Alyssa cried, clearly grossed out. Her nose wrinkled as she swam toward Finn, carefully avoiding the upchucked kibble. She turned Finn around, guided him toward the steps, and called out, “Dad, come quick!”

José hurried over from his chair by the pool. “What’s wrong?”

“Finn is sick. He threw up in the water,” Alyssa replied.

Her father glanced over at the kibble floating on the surface and whistled. “Yeah, he’s sick, all right. Swimming so soon after eating breakfast might’ve been too much for him. I’ll take care of the pool. You go ahead and dry Finn off and take him inside.
